Sydney Marathon Launches “Motion Festival” to Transform Race Week

Share

The Sydney Marathon is officially breaking the mold for race week. This year introduces the Sydney Marathon Motion Festival, a brand-new, four-day public celebration designed to turn the city into a massive cultural party from Thursday through Sunday of race week.

Marathon Journal Editor-in-Chief Letty Lundquist sat down with Simon Bryan, Operations Director for the Sydney Marathon, to break down exactly how this new initiative will bridge the gap between high-performance sports and vibrant urban culture. Modeled after the immersive city-wide experiences of major sporting events like the Australian Open and the Melbourne Formula One Grand Prix, the festival provides a massive new anchor for the event’s evolution.

“We are looking for an event that truly celebrates Sydney and puts the world on notice,” says Bryan. “By doing that, it’s not just about the runner experience—it’s also about the non-event public as well. We want to create an experience that people just can’t miss.”

Operating from its own digital hub at motionfestival.com.au, the festival is completely free to the public and blends live music, global food trucks, athlete panels, and interactive partner activations right in the heart of the harbor.

Four Days of Non-Stop Energy: The Quick Lineup

  • Thursday | The Soft Opening: A relaxed evening footprint featuring light entertainment and local acoustic music—the perfect welcome for early arrivals.
  • Friday | Shakeouts, Podcasts, & Culture: A full day of community shakeout runs and athlete panel discussions, capping off with a traditional First Nations culture parade and live evening music.
  • Saturday | The Ultimate Carb Fest: A massive pre-race block party featuring global food trucks serving carbohydrate-focused menus to help runners fuel up together.
  • Sunday | Race Day & Headline Afterparty: The ultimate spectator hub with live race broadcasts by day, transforming into a massive finish-line celebration with world-class DJ sets by night.

A Festival Built on the Streets of Circular Quay

The heart of Motion Festival beats at Circular Quay, one of Sydney’s most iconic transport hubs and tourist destinations. The location was chosen with maximum accessibility and celebration in mind. The world-famous Opera House finish line is a mere 500 meters away, and the runner Recovery Village sits just 300 meters from the main festival footprint.

Thanks to a strategic partnership with Transport for New South Wales, the city is fully embracing the festival spirit. While Thursday and Friday utilize a purposeful, dedicated venue space at Customs House, the weekend sees the festival roll directly out into the streets.

With 24/7 road closures secured for the weekend, the precinct will expand right onto the tarmac, filling the streets with outdoor furniture, bustling food trucks, and interactive sponsor activations. Global brands are already stepping up to bring the precinct to life, including premium recovery brands, an Asics shakeout activation, and a major interactive presence from Porsche.

The festival’s energy won’t be contained to the harbor, either. Motion Festival is expanding out onto the marathon course itself, featuring two main entertainment stages on-course alongside the flagship hub at Customs House. Each location will feature three to four high-energy DJs, ensuring that runners are propelled by an audio wall of sound and spectators stay thoroughly entertained.

The “Circular Economy” of Sydney Sport

The launch of Motion Festival coincides with another major evolutionary step for the event: moving the official Sydney Marathon Expo (The Running Show) to the Sydney Showgrounds at Sydney Olympic Park. Driven by the massive growth of the race, the move to this legendary legacy venue ensures that exhibitors and runners enjoy a spacious, world-class expo experience mirroring the world’s finest Majors. Full race details and runner logistics remain anchored at the main TCS Sydney Marathon Website.

To connect the two hubs, the event is introducing the Marathon Express—specially branded marathon trains running from Central Station straight out to Sydney Olympic Park.

This infrastructure creates a brilliant circular flow for the city. While runners head out to the Expo for an hour to grab their bibs, Motion Festival provides a four-day anchor right in the heart of the city center.

“It’s open to participants, and it’s open to Sydneysiders,” Bryan explained during his discussion with Lundquist. “By getting locals in the door for the festival, we hope they come along for race day to support and cheer on the runners. When you combine music, fun, food, and the joy of marathon running, it’s a pretty lethal combination of events.”

How to Experience Race Week Like a Pro

For visitors traveling to Sydney with limited time, balancing sightseeing with race preparation is an art form. Simon Bryan suggests the ultimate long-weekend itinerary to maximize the Sydney experience:
