In one of the most significant endurance technology moves in recent memory, Garmin Ltd. announced today, July 22, 2026, that it has acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic from parent company Peaksware Holdings.
The deal unites the world’s leading GPS wearable manufacturer with the premier digital training, workload analytics, and coaching platforms in endurance and strength sports. Peaksware Holdings sold only its sports entities, retaining its music education division (MakeMusic, Alfred Music, and Fons). Financial terms were not disclosed.
As part of the transaction, approximately 120 associates headquartered in Louisville, Colorado, will join Garmin’s global workforce of 23,000 employees. According to company representatives, TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic will operate as a standalone business unit under the Garmin umbrella.
“TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic share Garmin’s passion for empowering athletes and coaches around the world with world-class training tools, performance metrics and actionable insights. The addition of these highly successful platforms to the Garmin ecosystem will expand access to more authentic coaching experiences—connecting athletes with professional coaches who guide, motivate and inspire them to reach their goals.” — Brad Trenkle, Garmin Co-Chief Operating Officer
26 Years of Coaching Heritage Moves to Garmin
Founded 26 years ago by Dirk Friel, legendary endurance coach Joe Friel, and Gear Fisher, TrainingPeaks essentially pioneered modern digital training logs and metrics. Concepts like Training Stress Score (TSS), Normalized Power (NP), and Intensity Factor (IF)—all trademarked under the acquisition—have served as the common language for marathon coaches and distance runners for two decades.
Dirk Friel confirmed he will remain on board as a strategic adviser, alongside Peaksware President Lee Gerakos.
“Today marks a monumental milestone in the evolution of TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic… Joining forces with an iconic, industry-leading brand like Garmin is the ultimate catalyst for our next era of innovation. Their commitment to building the best-in-class ecosystem will allow us to accelerate product development, expand our reach, and deliver even greater value.” — Dirk Friel, Co-Founder of TrainingPeaks
Marathon Journal Analysis: What This Acquisition Means for You
While Garmin Connect is a robust, closed-loop tool for individual athletes reviewing raw GPS data, it historically lacked the complex, multi-athlete workflow that professional coaches require. Acquiring TrainingPeaks solves that instantly—giving Garmin direct ownership of the coach-athlete relationship.
Here are the key takeaways for distance runners, marathoners, and run coaches:
1. Will TrainingPeaks Stay Brand-Neutral?
The biggest question among coaches and athletes running mixed-device fleets is platform neutrality. TrainingPeaks’ greatest asset has always been its vendor independence—allowing a coach to manage 30 athletes on a single calendar whether they wear a Garmin, Coros, Suunto, Apple Watch, or Polar.
The Current Position: TrainingPeaks issued a statement to coaches clarifying that it will continue to operate as a cross-platform ecosystem, maintaining open API integrations for third-party devices. Because the value of TrainingPeaks relies heavily on its coach network, restricting competitor hardware would risk driving coaches toward alternative platforms.
2. Beyond Wearables: The Data & AI Play
Garmin Connect tracks what athletes did. TrainingPeaks tracks what a human coach prescribed, how well the athlete complied, and whether that combination led to a PR or a burnout.
By acquiring 26 years of structured training compliance data, Garmin gains the exact dataset needed to refine machine-learning models and next-generation adaptive coaching algorithms (such as expanding Garmin Coach into hyper-personalized, AI-driven marathon programming).
3. Strength Training Gains Front-Row Standing
Including TrainHeroic in the acquisition signals that Garmin recognizes modern marathon training extends far beyond logging weekly mileage. Heavy strength work, mobility, and injury prevention have become non-negotiable for marathoners aiming to withstand high volume. Integrating TrainHeroic’s strength-tracking framework alongside endurance analytics creates a far more comprehensive health profile.
4. Virtual & Indoor Training Realignment
The deal also brings TrainingPeaks Virtual (the virtual cycling and route-preview platform acquired by TrainingPeaks in 2024) under the same roof as Garmin’s Tacx indoor trainer line. This sets up a potential unified virtual training package for multisport athletes and indoor winter treadmill/trainer workouts.
The Bottom Line for Marathoners
If you currently use a TrainingPeaks plan to prepare for an upcoming marathon, nothing changes overnight. Your calendar, workout syncs, athlete rosters, and device connections will continue working as usual.
Longer term, expect to see tighter dual-way syncing between Garmin watches and TrainingPeaks, potential subscription bundling options within Garmin’s software ecosystem, and deeper integration of strength metrics into your overall training readiness scores.
Marathon Journal will continue monitoring developments as Garmin outlines its long-term software roadmap for coaches and athletes.
