Redemption in Copenhagen: USATF Secures Seven Spots for World Championships

In a historic move to rectify the “Atlanta Ambush,” USA Track & Field (USATF) has successfully lobbied World Athletics to expand the women’s roster for the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships.

Following the March 18–19 vote in Poland, international officials granted an “exceptional, one-time” expansion, allowing Team USA to send seven women to Copenhagen this September, nearly doubling the standard entry of four. This decision serves as the final chapter in a saga that began when a lead-vehicle error derailed the frontrunners at the USATF Half Marathon Championships earlier this month.

The Roster: A Blend of Champions

The expanded team ensures that the three athletes most affected by the course diversion—Jessica McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat—will represent the United States on the world stage. Joining them are the official top finishers from the Atlanta race.

To clarify the unique status of this year’s team, the following table outlines the 2026 selections:

The “Scoring” Compromise

To maintain the competitive integrity of the World Championships, the expansion comes with specific technical caveats. While all seven women will compete in the U.S. singlet and earn individual World Athletics ranking points, they will be divided into two categories:

  • Scoring Athletes (4): These runners will contribute to the official U.S. team time and podium pursuit.
  • Non-Scoring Athletes (3): While official members of Team USATF, these runners will wear a distinct team kit. Per World Athletics’ “anti-tactical” rules, they may not form a pack with the scoring athletes during the race.

“Our focus was on doing right by the athletes,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. “Jessica, Emma Grace, and Ednah had clearly separated themselves in the race… we are grateful to World Athletics for a solution that recognizes the reality of what occurred in Atlanta.”

Full Accountability and Support

The logistical error in Atlanta, which occurred when a lead vehicle was diverted due to an emergency, left the sport’s leadership searching for a fair resolution. Beyond the world championship spots, USATF has already implemented a “Dual Podium” in the domestic history books, recognizing both McClain and Born as 2026 Champions.

Financially, USATF is ensuring the athletes are not penalized. The organization will cover all travel expenses for the additional entries and has pledged to pay out matching prize money should a non-scoring athlete finish in a prize-eligible position in Copenhagen.

Next Steps for Team USA

The full, finalized roster for the World Road Running Championships—which also includes the 1-mile and 5K distances—will be officially named after the following events:

  • USATF 1 Mile Championships: April 22
  • USATF 5K Championships: May 2

The world will watch as this unique seven-woman contingent heads to Denmark on September 19–20, looking to turn a logistical nightmare into a podium triumph.
