While Rachel Entrekin’s historic, outright victory rightfully captured the headlines at last week’s Cocodona 250, a quiet equipment revolution was unfolding just beneath the surface of the leaderboards.
In a grueling 250-mile race defined by relentless terrain and shifting surfaces, gear selection isn’t just about comfort—it is a critical strategy for survival. For a staggering seven out of the top 11 finishers, that strategy centered on a single piece of footwear: the Mount to Coast H1.
For a brand only two years into its existence, commanding the feet of the sport’s elite at a pinnacle ultramarathon is a massive statement. But for the team at Mount to Coast (MTC), it is validation of a specific engineering philosophy.
Defying Material Degradation over 250 Miles
The primary enemy of any ultrarunner’s footwear is “dead foam”—the inevitable point in a race where a midsole loses its compliance, leaving the runner absorbing the brutal impact of the trail. Mount to Coast set out specifically to engineer an antidote to that late-race breakdown.
“From day one, we’ve focused on creating shoes that feel exactly the same at mile 500 as at mile one by focusing on minimizing material degradation,” says Yeti Zhang, Head of Product at Mount to Coast. “The H1, in particular, is built for athletes running 250 miles, who can’t have their shoes feeling dead right as they’re getting to the hardest parts of an ultra.”
The H1 is designed as a road-to-trail hybrid, an emerging category tailored for modern ultras that feature a mix of rugged singletrack, fire roads, and paved transitional segments. By pairing a resilient, highly responsive midsole with a tunable fit system and a versatile outsole, the brand aims to offer protective cushioning without sacrificing energy return or stability.
Mount to Coast H1: Cocodona 250 Highlights
- Elite Presence: 7 out of the top 11 finishers chose to race in the H1.
- Podium Success: The shoe secured the 2nd (Kilian Korth) and 3rd (Cody Poskin) overall spots.
- The Mission: Engineered with a proprietary foam formulation specifically designed to prevent foam packing and degradation over extreme ultra distances.
Proven on the Podium
The proof of Zhang’s design philosophy was scattered across the Cocodona finish line. The athletes utilizing the H1 noted that the shoe’s structural integrity remained remarkably intact long after their own bodies began to fade.
- Kilian Korth (2nd Place): “The H1s are a shoe made for the unique blend of high performance and high mileage. They feel cushioned, durable, and responsive… all at the same time. My feet were never tired of being in them, even after 250 miles.”
- Cody Poskin (3rd Place): “I chose to race in the H1 because of the wide toe box, great cushioning, and durable construction. They kept my feet protected and secure the entire way.”
- Jeff Garmire (10th Place): “The H1 must have been crafted by the devil. It has no weakness and offers comfort that extends even beyond 250 miles. My feet had a party at Cocodona, even when my brain was struggling to put words together.”
Other top-tier finishers choosing the H1 included DJ Fox, Megan Eckert, and Zach Hauer, who weaponized the shoe’s versatility to navigate the diverse Arizona terrain.
Transcending Distance: From First to Last
While elite podiums build brand prestige, the soul of a 250-mile race is often found at the very back of the pack, where athletes battle time cutoffs and sheer exhaustion just to make it to the line. For MTC leadership, the true test of the H1 was mirrored in the race’s final moments.
“Seeing so many top Cocodona athletes choose H1 doesn’t surprise us — that’s exactly why we built this brand and made these shoes,” Zhang reflected. “But we’re equally proud of the last Cocodona finisher, who also wore the H1. Seeing him cross the finish line, so clearly exhausted but still moving, was an amazing illustration of our goal to help all athletes transcend distance.”
As the dust settles on Cocodona, the ultra-endurance community is taking note. In a sport where legacy brands have long held a monopoly on the trail, a newcomer has proven that advanced midsole longevity might just be the ultimate competitive advantage.
