The numbers are staggering — even by New York standards.

New York Road Runners announced Wednesday that more than 240,000 runners from over 160 countries applied for the non-guaranteed entry drawing for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon, marking the largest application pool in race history.

The figure represents nearly a 20% increase over last year’s record and underscores the unprecedented global demand surrounding the marathon’s 50th anniversary of its iconic five-borough course.

The 2026 race, scheduled for November 1, follows a 2025 edition that set a world record with 59,226 finishers — the largest marathon field ever assembled.

The Most Competitive Drawing in Marathon Running

With demand at an all-time high, entry through the general drawing remains one of the most competitive opportunities in sport.

Only about 1% of applicants were accepted.

Even time qualifiers — typically among the fastest amateur runners — faced extraordinary standards. Due to overwhelming demand, NYRR accepted just the top 10% of non-NYRR marathon qualifiers. Successful applicants needed performances that were 22 minutes and 52 seconds faster than the published qualifying standards for their age group.

In practical terms: qualifying wasn’t enough. Runners had to significantly outperform the standard.

A 50-Year Evolution

The five-borough format debuted in 1976 as part of the U.S. Bicentennial celebration, transforming what began in 1970 as a four-loop race in Central Park with just 55 finishers into a citywide spectacle.

Today, the marathon attracts nearly 60,000 runners and more than two million spectators annually, cementing its place alongside global icons like the Boston Marathon and the London Marathon.

For many, the finish in Central Park represents not just a race, but a once-in-a-lifetime milestone.

More Than a Race: Charity and Climate Commitments

In recognition of the anniversary year, NYRR is expanding several access pathways:

  • Official Charity Partner Program: Now at a record 670+ partner organizations, with a goal of raising $100 million in 2026. In 2025, charity runners raised a record $80 million. Notably, 60% of participating charities are headquartered in New York City.
  • Across the Boroughs Sweepstakes: Launching March 5, two winners will receive complimentary marathon entry plus guaranteed access to all six races in the NYRR Five-Borough Series.
  • Member-Only Second-Chance Drawing: Approximately 24,000 eligible NYRR members who were not selected in the general drawing will automatically enter a secondary drawing, with a projected 2% acceptance rate.
  • NYRR Team for Climate: Opening in April during Earth Month, the initiative allows runners to fundraise toward sustainability projects aimed at offsetting the event’s carbon footprint. Since its 2024 launch, the program has raised more than $1.6 million.

“Year after year, the TCS New York City Marathon unites runners of all ages and abilities who believe in the power of every step to transform lives,” said NYRR CEO Rob Simmelkjaer in a statement. “This year is especially meaningful as we celebrate 50 years of the five-borough course.”

The Takeaway

At a time when participation numbers across some endurance events are stabilizing post-pandemic, New York continues to accelerate.

A 1% acceptance rate places the race among the most selective mass-participation sporting events in the world — a testament not only to its prestige, but to the enduring global appeal of running 26.2 miles through the heart of New York City.

If 2025 proved the marathon can break participation records, 2026 is proving it can redefine demand.
